Been quiet lately, other than the complete site rebuild, I have not had much time to put in to RMF lately. However, that is about to change! Tonight see’s the first part of a set of tutorials where we create a bulb riding an exorcise bike that is powering itself. I saw the image in a 3D magazine. I absolutely loved the concept however it was originally created in 3DS Max so I simply had to try and rebuilt it in Cinema 4D. A few parts proved to be a bit tricky but I worked my way around them and got it together.

In part one we start off by making the light bulb itself (pictured below.) Which I have had a few requests asking for a tutorial for anyway….

The ultimate goal will be to produce this….

Since starting this tutorial set I have discovered that the original bulb character is created by André Kutscherauer of http://www.ak3d.de for his incredible short film “Self Illumination”

    Love your tuts as always!
One thing about the bulb glass; you’ve modelled it as a solid object (like a crystal ball) and that makes it look quite chunky. How about putting it in a Cloth Nurb with thickness to make it into thin glass?

Göran, You make a fantastic point!! In my earlier versions, I didn’t use cloth nurbs but instead I continued the splines back up inside the bulb following the contours but I totally forgot for this tutorial!

I will try and put a Part 1 – additional tutorial together covering this!

      Thanks!

Nice tutorial, great site full of tips, too!

One comment: don’t really know if the ‘rape’ joke is one to stuck with. After ~20-odd tutorials it wears a bit thin, and i’ve had more than a few female colleagues who (after being pointed to your site by yours truly for tutorials) have had mixed/bad reactions to it. Just a heads up.

Thank you Cathy Jo. I will definitely share this re-telling with my students. They already know the more traditional version which I have been telling for years. This will add an important understanding of how to adapt a story and be faithful to its essence. The second graders all write folk tale adaptations in the Spring, this will be a great resource to expand their learning.
